Marriage and Family Series ~ ~ ~ ~ Duties of the Husband

This week we look at the duties of the husband toward the wife.

Duties of the Husband

Live with for life > Matthew 19:3-9

3The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” 4And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning `made them male and female,’ 5″and said, `For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6″So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” 7They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” 8He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9″And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”

Be faithful to > Malachi 2:14, 15

14Yet you say, “For what reason?”

Because the Lord has been witness

Between you and the wife of your youth,

With whom you have dealt treacherously;

Yet she is your companion

And your wife by covenant.

15But did He not make them one,

Having a remnant of the Spirit?

And why one?

He seeks godly offspring.

Therefore take heed to your spirit,

And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.

Rule over > Genesis 3:16

16To the woman He said:

“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;

In pain you shall bring forth children;

Your desire shall be for your husband,

And he shall rule over you.”

Honor > 1 Peter 3:7

7Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

Love > Ephesians 5:25-33

25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31″For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Confer with > Genesis 31:4-16

4So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field, to his flock, 5and said to them, “I see your father’s countenance, that it is not favorable toward me as before; but the God of my father has been with me. 6″And you know that with all my might I have served your father. 7″Yet your father has deceived me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not allow him to hurt me. 8″If he said thus: `The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore speckled. And if he said thus: `The streaked shall be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore streaked. 9″So God has taken away the livestock of your father and given them to me. 10″And it happened, at the time when the flocks conceived, that I lifted my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the rams which leaped upon the flocks were streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted. 11″Then the Angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, `Jacob.’ And I said, `Here I am.’ 12″And He said, `Lift your eyes now and see, all the rams which leap on the flocks are streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. 13`I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.’ ” 14Then Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, “Is there still any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house? 15″Are we not considered strangers by him? For he has sold us, and also completely consumed our money. 16″For all these riches which God has taken from our father are really ours and our children’s; now then, whatever God has said to you, do it.”

Be Satisfied with Wife > Proverbs 5:18,19

18Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of your youth.19As a loving deer and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; And always be enraptured with her love.

Provide for > 1 Timothy 5:8

8But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
