Marriage and Family Series – Enduring

This next to the last characteristic of Biblical Love just by title seems to exude the idea of something excruciating. Nevertheless, is it? Does it have to be? – –

endureth 5278 5719 all things. 3956

endures all things.

4Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never fails.

King James with Greek Reference Numbers

In the Greek Language the meaning of “endureth” is as follows:

5278. uJpomevnw hupoámeánoµ, hoop-om-en’-o; from 5259 and 3306; to stay under (behind), i.e. remain; fig. to undergo, i.e. bear (trials), have fortitude, persevere:- abide, endure, (take) patient (-ly), suffer, tarry behind.

5259. uJpov hupoá, hoop-oá’; a primary prep.; under, i.e. (with the gen.) of place (beneath), or with verbs (the agency or means, through); (with the acc.) of place (whither [underneath] or where [below] or time (when [at]):- among, by, from, in, of, under, with. [In composition, it retains the same general applications, espec. of inferior position or condition, and spec. covertly or moderately.]

3306. mevnw meánoµ, men’-o; a primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy):- abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry (for), x thine own.

Notwithstanding what we might desperately, want to believe, God’s desire is for us to carry on in our love for others regardless of what may come our way. Endurance may well be one of the toughest things we will ever have to do within our families or marriages. There are often times when we no longer want to go on with a relationship, for us perhaps it has no more life. Nevertheless, God desires that we press forward and continue to stand firm on principal, allowing Him to love others through us. We often chose the attitude we will have when going through something difficult. It will not be easy at times and we will have great doubts but if we endure, we will get to that glorious point in biblical love, which I will address in the next section.

In the Greek Language the meaning of “all things” is as follows:

3956. pa`” pas pas; incl. all the forms of declension; appar. a primary word; all, any, every, the whole:- all (manner of, means), alway (-s), any (one), x daily, + ever, every (one, way), as many as, + no (-thing), x thoroughly, whatsoever, whole, whosoever.
