Love, God Style

16“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

4Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 4–8

God’s idea of love and the idea of love in today’s society are vastly at odds. Today people look so much to their feelings to support the idea of love. God calls us to look at our actions to support our idea of love; regardless of our feelings.

When Jesus struggled in that garden in dawns light; He was not asking Himself what He felt. He was asking the Father, What is Your Will?” and “Is there any other way?” Negotiating with His feelings, I do not believe, was an option for Jesus.

We are called to make our attempts, here on this earth via the power of the Holy Spirit, to imitate Christ. Yet, day in and day out we ask feelings what it is we should do. Why? They are notoriously unreliable! Why? They are known to be fickle and fleeting. Why? After all the times they only led us to trouble. Why? Because they are ruling, instead of God ruling.

When it comes to love, God love; we need to tell our feelings to get lost and start applying agape love. Love in action. Love as an action; a conscious choice to show that individual love. Patience, when we want to be short tempered. Longsuffering, when we want to give up on them. Celebrate with them over their success, when we want to envy their achievement. Kindness, in the face of a nasty person who is hurting so deeply.

Jesus forgot His feelings and in the greatest act of love ever, chose to show us His love with His death on the cross. To me, that is a love that bears all – all my sin and shame. In the face of that fact, how could I possibly think, I have a choice but to love?

  1. love is a hard topic for me, especially right now. when you look at the way we love, like you pointed out, it really is nothing like what the verse you quoted describes. and you’re right, love has become a feeling or a thing we create versus a series of continuous actions. maybe that’s why it so often falls apart and leaves us in a bad place. maybe because what we were experiencing wasn’t actually love at all.

    • Often people are experiencing what is not love but instead being in love with the idea of love. Love is hard work, it is commitment, it is dedication to yourself and another. It is about knowing when to let go and when to keep going when you want to quit. It is about being and acting as a loving person. You said it best yourself in your comment, love is a “series of continuous actions” which without them we can neither love ourselves or others. A healthy self love must come first. If a person cannot love and respect themselves they are not going to be able to love and respect others. To the degree we love and care for ourselves, we are able to love and care for others. There are so many wounded people in the world today….godly, agape love is rare but something we should aspire to achieve. Dead Seas Scrolls and PTM Writer
